It’s no secret that many California growers are dealing with serious cutbacks in agricultural water, especially in San Diego County. Soon other parts of the state may be facing similar cutbacks. Are you ready? What can you do as a producer?

This full day program will cover all aspects of irrigation efficiency and the new technologies available that can optimize your water use in ornamental horticulture. A tour of local selected facilities will showcase some of the featured technologies for optimizing irrigation.

The topics covered:

• What uniformity means to irrigation efficiency and water savings
• Basic irrigation design systems and components
• New technologies for irrigation efficiencies
• Water runoff and recirculation systems

Tentative Agenda
7:30AM. The attendees will meet at the Center for Applied Horticulture Research and learn of the latest irrigation systems and potential improvements that can be made to optimize water use by our sponsors. Visit with our sponsors.

8:00 AM – 10:30 AM. The presentations will continue while on a tour of three local facilities where selected improvements have optimized their water use and reduced costs.  The first presentation is Monitoring, Scheduling, and Timing for Optimal use of Water Resources by Heiner Lieth, Professor, Crop Ecology of Greenhouse and Nursery Crops, UC Davis.

The next two presentations will be at our second stop and lunch will be provided. Larry Schwankl, Irrigation Specialist, Dept. of Land, Air and Water Resources, UC Davis will speak on Basics of Design for Irrigation Systems. David Shaw, Landscape-Turf-Irrigation Management Farm Advisor, UCCE San Diego, will present Strategies for Achieving Set Reductions

We will make a final tour stop at a local facility followed by our final presentation by Larry Schwankl - Basics of Components of Irrigation Systems, and Maintenance and Repair

Finally, we will return to the Center for Applied Horticulture Research and hear from our sponsors. The event will end at approximately 4:00 PM.
