California’s current drought is imposing significant impacts on California agriculture. This program provides basic information and practical solutions for improving irrigation efficiency to make the best use of available irrigation water. There will be morning presentations and an afternoon field trip to various sites demonstrating principles and practices.

This statewide program is being supported by a California Department of Water Resources grant.

8:40am	Irrigation Scheduling	Dr. Richard Evans, UCCE Environmental Horticulturist, UC Davis When and how much water to apply in containers and in field soil. What are the options to measure irrigation demand? Other factors to consider: leaching fraction in containers.
9:25am	Improving Irrigation Performance Using Microirrigation	Dr. Ben Faber, Farm Advisor, UCCE Ventura/Santa Barbara Cos. An overview of irrigation systems: sprinkler, micro irrigation and improving irrigation performance.

10:30am	Irrigation Management Technology and Soil Moisture Sensors	Dr. Loren Oki, UCCE Assoc. Specialist in Landscape Horticulture, UC Davis How does a grower start to use sensor technology? How do sensors work and what type of sensors are available? What sensors to use in pots? What to use in field soil?
11:15am	Water harvesting and recycling, and NRCS Grants	Rich Casale, District Conservationist (USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Capitola, CA.)

12:20pm	Ag-Rite, Watsonville	Field demonstration of water sensors and associated technology (Russel Maridon)

1:25pm	Terra Sole Nursery, Watsonville	Demonstration of the components of a water harvesting system on a relatively small container plant nursery. The system reduces the nursery’s dependence on well water and increases water conservation (John and Sherry Hall).
2:10pm	Travel
2:40pm	Kitayama Nursery	Early efforts in using irrigation technology with water sensors and adapting to preexisting greenhouse environmental control technology (Carol Kitayama and Jimmy Zheng). Water conservation practices in nursery (Rich Casale). Keston Giudici of Hortau will speak on greenhouse environmental control technology.
