November 5, 2009 ABCs of Plant Pathology (in Spanish)- Fresno
This workshop includes a 3-hour session on plant pathology presented in Spanish by Dr. Maria de la Fuente, UCCE Farm Advisor in San Benito and Santa Clara Counties. Assisting her will be Amanda Crump, Environmental Horticulture Farm Advisor in Fresno County and Karen Robb, Senior Horticulture Specialist at Target Specialty Products in Fresno. In addition, lunch will be provided by the California Center for Urban Horticulture, UC Davis.
The educational session focuses on aspects of plant pathology that are relevant to greenhouse and nursery production of ornamental plants. Attendees will learn about the various types of pathogens that affect ornamental crops including fungi, bacteria, nematodes and viruses. Abiotic factors causing disease-like symptoms on plants will also be discussed. Other topics include diagnosing plant diseases, examples of diseases commonly found on ornamental plants, methods for preventing or managing diseases and rapid assays for identifying pathogens.
