It is clear that a reduction in pesticide use is attainable if effective monitoring techniques are used. Therefore, this program emphasizes monitoring as one of the most important aspects of integrated pest management. In addition, it is also clear that the workforce in ornamental plant production is largely Hispanic in origin. Therefore, these trainings will be in both English and Spanish.

Basic Identification of Pests and Recognizing the Type of Pests by the Type of Damage Observed |
What is an insect? What makes an insect different than a mite, a spider, a crab, a snail, a slug? What do the good guys look like? Why do we treat mites differently than insects? And how to identify pests by the types of damage observed will be presented. |

| 10:20–11:00AM | Monitoring Techniques | Examples of monitoring methods used for different pests in ornamental plant production and examples of pest id on yellow sticky cards will be presented. |

The Benefits of Record Keeping | In this segment we will discuss how monitoring will lead to a better idea of pest phenology by crop and season, and that these benefits can be seen through good record keeping. |

Es posible reducir el uso de pesticidas a través del uso de técnicas de monitoreo efectivas. Este programa hace énfasis en el uso de l monitoreo como uno de los aspectos más importantes del manejo integrado de plagas. Dado que la mayoría de los trabajadores en el área de producción de plantas ornamentales es de habla Hispana, este entrenamiento será ofrecido en Inglés y en Español.
